Mindful colouring – free printable

mindful colouring pencils

Mindful colouring is a technique that involves using colouring as a form of meditation and mindfulness. It’s a simple and enjoyable way to relax and calm the mind. When colouring mindfully, one is fully present and engaged in the activity.

To practice mindful colouring, you need to be fully present. This means focusing on the design you are colouring, the colours you are selecting, the movement of your hand and fingers, the way the colours fill the space, and how your hand feels while colouring.

Engaging in colouring activities helps us temporarily shift our focus away from distressing thoughts and gives us some relief from them.

Colouring and art therapy can help reduce stress and enhance creativity. Colouring is a simple and non-permanent activity, so enjoy it without any pressure. Avoid doing other tasks while colouring.

There are different ways for adults to engage in colouring and drawing activities. These include using adult colouring books, drawing apps, and paint-by-number apps on phones.

Additionally, there are various colouring supplies such as coloured pencils, fine-tipped markers, and crayons available both online and in physical stores.

How do you Mindfully Colour?

Colouring-in is a simple activity, but you can enhance its positive impact by following certain steps:

  1. To improve your focus, it’s best to avoid distractions. Colouring mindfully can be done even when children are around, but you may find it easier to be fully engaged when you are alone.
  2. Before you begin, sit comfortably and take a few deep breaths to ground yourself.
  3. Choose a picture that you have a strong connection with. If you have already started working on one but feel disconnected from it, it is okay to switch to a different design.
  4. Feel free to use any colour you like for the tree, even if it’s not green or brown. You can also colour outside the lines if you want to. Follow your instincts and choose the colours that feel right to you at that moment.
  5. If you notice your thoughts drifting away, simply take note of it without judging yourself and bring your attention back to the present moment.
  6. To improve focus and stay grounded, you can use a technique of stating your actions in your mind. For example, you might say to yourself, “I am using a red pencil” or “I am colouring the sky.”
  7. Practice mindfulness and avoid judging your work. Remember that there is no right or wrong in self-expression.
